5th Grade Poetry in Mr. Thaler’s Class

In Mr. Thaler’s Language Arts class, the fifth graders are working on composing poetry. Each month, Mr. Thaler introduces a different kind of poetry. So far, the students have studied cinquains, limericks, and tankas. In each case, students learn about rhyme, rhythm patterns, syllables, and word choices. Mr. Thaler challenges his class to write poems that connect to books they are reading, like From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, or current Social Studies topics, such as the Vikings. At the end of the year, Mr. Thaler’s class will construct poetry books with examples of each of the monthy poems. In December, the students will try their hand at Sonnets. Perhaps the next William Shakespeare is among this group!
