MS Focus – Choosing Civility

As caretakers of children, we are constantly trying to keep up on the latest information on teaching methods, trends in education, and advances in technology.  Academic journals, instruction manuals and professional conferences give us the newest and most applicable information possible. However, we didn’t need to look very far to find this gem. Choosing Civility, The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct was written by Dr. P.M. Forni from Johns Hopkins University, our own backyard! No fancy graphics, interactive CDs or website support come with the book – just common sense.  This book, which the Middle School is using as the foundation for this year’s Advisory Program, brings us back to basics. Dr. Forni’s  twenty-five rules are simple and accessible to students of any age. “Listen,”  “Pay Attention,”  “Speak Kindly;” does it get any easier to understand? This book takes the ideas of respect and derech eretz and breaks them down into more digestible pieces for students and faculty members alike. By teaching the steps to respect, or civility, we hope to achieve it. If you get a chance, pick up a copy for yourself and your family. It is a quick and enjoyable read and one that we hope will make a lasting impression.
